Fab investment is reaching historic levels. Worldwide 300mm fab equipment spending is projected to hit $151 billion in 2027, and advanced process capacity at 7nm and below is expected to grow at nearly double the industry average rate through 2028, driven almost entirely by AI infrastructure demand.
Memory has become the industry’s defining constraint. Total memory revenue is projected to nearly triple from $226 billion in 2025 to roughly $790 billion in 2027, with high-bandwidth memory capacity already pre-committed through 2026 and forward allocations extending into 2027 — making memory, not logic, the tightest link in the AI hardware supply chain.
Skilled labor is now the pacing constraint on new capacity. Building and running a modern fab requires thousands of specialized electrical engineers, process technicians, and cleanroom-qualified construction workers, and a persistent global shortage of this talent is delaying facility ramp-ups even at well-funded, fully permitted projects.
Supply chains are being rebuilt around geography, not just cost. Roughly 18 new fabs are expected to begin construction globally between 2025 and 2027, with investment broadly distributed across the US, Taiwan, Korea, China, Japan, and Europe as governments pursue supply chain resilience and semiconductor self-sufficiency simultaneously.
